More F-gas fines - including some big names

The Environment Agency has issed over £2.2 million in civil penalties since 2023.

On the 16 August, the Environment Agency released details Opens in a new window of the £2.2 million civil penalties it has issued for F-gas regulation infringements over the period of February 2023 and August 2024.

These included 11 fines totalling over £1m to an 80 year-old man based in Kent. John Brett was a former director of Eurochem (SE) Ltd which was dissolved in 2016. He continued to trade as Eurochem (SE) and received the penalties for failing to obtain sufficient HFC quota Opens in a new window, failing to report imports, and not record sales correctly.

Interestingly, the remaining fines include some familiar names:

  • BMW (UK) Ltd
  • Boeing Commercial Aviation Services Europe Limited
  • EDF (EDF Energy Nuclear Generation Ltd)
  • Electrolux (Electrolux PLC and Electrolux Appliances AB)
  • Fiat Chrysler Automobile UK Ltd
  • Scania (Scania Great Britain Ltd - the lorry people) and
  • Schmitz Cargobull (UK) Limited (you often see their lorries on the motorway).

As I have said before, at Checkmark we fully support the laws affecting purchase, sale and handling of F-gases. We think the Earth’s atmosphere should be protected.
