The Environment Agency is proposing to start charging users for administering the F-gas scheme.

The Environment Agency (EA) has announced a consultation Opens in a new window on a proposal to charge users in order to meet the costs of administering the F-gas scheme. It would like to introduce the charges in April 2025.

Up until now the cost of these services have been government funded and free for businesses to use. If the proposal goes ahead, the services would be self-funding.

For F-gas the proposed charges are:

  • New F-gas registration charge of £364
  • Annual subsistence charge of £1228

There are similar charges proposed for the ODS (Ozone Depleting Substances) scheme.

At Checkmark we do appreciate the drive to reduce central costs in government, but believe that these charges will (a) eventually be passed on to the end-user, and (b) will only further encourage unscrupulous businesses to flout the law.
